Get Started with Social Networking

KPEnterprises sponsors a monthly Meetup Group for business owners and technology managers who want to find out how they can use technology to increase their success.

Our goal is to help our clients separate themselves from their competition through the strategic use of technology.

In December we're going to look at Social Networking Hands On.

You've probably been to a hundred meetings so far where people have tips about this tool and that tool. But almost no one draws a nice straight line between fiddling around on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn . . . And Making Money!

Well, we're going to change that. Read More.

The Sacramento Business Technology Roundtable meets on the Third Thursday of each month.

Thursday, December 17th
6:30 PM
Herakles Data Center
1100 N Market Blvd
Sacramento, CA 95834

Hope to see you there!

December Calendar Notes

Well we made it to the end of the year.

A lot of us have been through the ringer this year. But we're still here! Let's work together to make 2010 a great year of recovery and growth.

Here are some calendar notes for December 2010:

Dec. 4
I personally have a "short day" on Friday 12/4 as I am off to my annual silent retreat over the weekend.

Dec. 24th
We're open as usual. I expect this to be a light day. But we'll be here.

Dec. 25th
We're closed for Christmas Day.

Dec. 31st
We're open as usual. I expect this to be a light day. But we'll be here.

Jan. 1, 2010
We're closed for New Years Day.

Of course your systems will be monitored 24 hours a day. Patches and fixes will be applied as usual. And we will respond to all urgent matters even if our office is closed.

Our staff will each be taking time off here and there. But we have added a few people, so we are well equipped for whatever comes up.

Enjoy the season!

Viruses Exploding in 2009

A couple of weeks ago I met with some folks from McAfee, the virus fighting company. They spilled some very interesting statistics. And it looks pretty scary . . .

  • According to datalossdb.org, we can expect a 500% increase in malware during 2009.

  • and 90% of today's malware is stealthware designed to steal information

We all hear about the stolen laptops that show up on ebay. Obviously, those laptops contain company data, personnel information, etc.

But the problem is much bigger than that. Stealthware and spyware lives on your computer in your office and looks for specific patterns of information -- like Social Security Numbers -- and sends them "back home" to the evil people who collect this data, sort it out, and create illegal databases they can sell.

But wait. It gets worse.

Between Facebook, Linked In, Classmates.com, and the basic results you can get with Google, there's a lot of disjointed information about you (and your employees, and your clients or patients, etc.).

Next the bad guys do a mashup of the databases. That means they connect the databases together based on a few elements they have in common. For example, Let's say I can get . . .

- Your name, high school, college, and current job from Facebook

- Your name, current job, past job, and work addresses from Linked In

- Your name, high school, colledge, and graduation dates from Classmates.com

- Your name and social security number from a stolen database

Once you put all that together, it's easy to run a credit check on you . . . and get a list of all your past addresses, employers, and more.

Having your identity stolen consists of simply getting enough information to acquire a credit card or loan in your name.

And that gets easier every day.

If you really want to scare yourself, add this RSS feed to your feedreader: http://datalossdb.org/latest_incidents.rss. They report lots of databases stolen with a few thousand name here and a few thousand names there . . . and hundreds of thousands of names stolen on a regular basis.

For example, the three biggest databases stolen so far this month are . . .

  • 131,000 records stolen from the United States Army National Guard (August 4, 2009)

  • 148,680 records stolen from Amuse, Inc. (August 9, 2009)

  • 197,000 records stolen from Mitsubishi UFJ Nicos (August 6, 2009)

and the largest "incident" of all time occurred this year:

126,000,000 records stolen from Heartland Payment Systems (January 20, 2009)

Multiply all that by thousands of smaller incidents and it begins to look BIG!

Scared yet?

And of the data stolen,
  • 33% contained Social Security Numbers

  • 34% contain Names and Addresses

  • 6% contain credit card numbers

  • 6% contain date of birth

  • 5% contain financial information

What can you do? Well, it's pretty simple: follow the rules of safe computing that we constantly harp on.

Take this stuff seriously.

Yes: playing it safe slows things down and is a little inconvenient. But what's the alternative?

If you would like a Free Training on safe computing habits, please contact us today.

We'd much rather make money stopping this stuff than trying to clean up afterward!

Topic: Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery

Let's just SAY that there's a flood. Or a fire. Or a hazmat spill. And you can't get to your office for a week.

What do you do? How tied are you to technology, and can you survive without your technology?

How long can you stay in business?

What do you need to continue bringing in revenue? Will you have that if your office is unavailble?

Join us to talk about planning for the day something unexpected happens in your business.

The really Good News is that technology is making it easier to be prepared than ever before. With hosted applications like Salesforce.com and virtualization, you can rest assured that you'll be IN business even if everyone around you is out of business.

Join us at the next Sacramento Business Technology Owners Meetup.

- Bring Your Ideas! If you have a great system that helps your business in a crisis, tell us about it.

- Bring Your Fears! If you know you're totally unprepared, come and find out what others are doing.

Past meetings have been filled with great people sharing wonderful ideas. Join us August 20th - Third Thursday - at 3:00 PM.
